Case of the Month - December 2024
D - Inferior mesenteric artery
The delayed images from the tagged RBC scan show subtle accumulation of tracer in the region of the descending colon, which receives arterial supply from the inferior mesenteric artery. Since the CTA was negative, conventional catheter-based angiography will likely also be negative. As such, the decision was made to perform provocative angiography to localize the bleed.
On average, what percentage of cases does provocative angiography successfully identify and treat the occult, intermittent bleed?
A. 15 - 25%
B. 35 - 45%
C. 55 - 65%
D. 75 - 85%
Bonus question - What is the mortality rate of provocative angiography reported in recent studies?
